Milton Keynes man jailed for a year for causing injury while driving and further drug offences

A man from Milton Keynes has been jailed for a year for driving offences after running over a 12-year-old boy, and for Class A drug possession.

Kieran Murphy, 31, from St. Dunstan’s, Coffee Hall, received his sentence in connection with a incident on August 4th, when he was driving his motorcycle on a grass play area near Lammas in Beanhill. He hit the victim, who suffered a leg injury that required surgery, and later attempted to evade arrest.

Mr. Murphy was officially arrested on August 6th. He was charged at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court on September 28th with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident, driving otherwise than in accordance with a license, driving without insurance, and possession of heroin.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ immediate imprisonment, as well as 2 years disqualification with extended test order, a victim surcharge £100, and £150 in costs. For the drug offence, he was also sentenced to 2 months’ imprisonment to run concurrently. Mr. Murphy was sentenced on October 30th at Aylesbury Crown Court, having plead guilty to all charges.

PC Ian Stevens from Thames Valley Police’s Roads Police department declared his hope that the conviction of Mr. Murphy is proof the police are working to help those involved in these situations.

He said: “Murphy in this caused serious injury and distress to a child and then failed to stop attempting to evade arrest. Unlicensed off road bikes are dangerous when ridden in environments like this or on redways.

“We hope that the swift arrest and prosecution of Murphy will reassure the community that we take incidents like this and the safety of children very seriously.

“We will continue to work with the neighbourhood teams to enforce action against users of these bikes that ride in an anti-social manner and put the public and themselves at unacceptable risk.”
